Description:
Here is what may be the shortest album I have rated so far on this page, clocking in at only 24 minutes - Sydney-based Sundae Wuz' instrumental chiptune project "DONK QUEST".
The tunes generally compose of simplistic, repeating melody lines and backing harmonies, at times composed of another singular line of notes, both in a classic, low-bit sound not unlike a soundtrack to an old-school adventure video game. The titles of the tracks further indicate that this theming was intentional, being named after starting screens, types of game levels etc.
Percussion is largely missing from the tracks, save for a couple exceptions that end up providing an entirely new atmosphere by their rhythmic presence, such as in the latter half of "TALL GRASS" in a fitting low-bit style to match the melodies, and in "WIZARD CLUB", where it takes on more of a rave-y disco style.
One thing is for certain: if this were an actual soundtrack to a video game, I'd certainly play it. With some additional variation in the melodies and song structure, these songs could easily go from enjoyable listens to pieces of mastery pushing the boundaries of a limited set of sounds to work with to their absolute limit.
