Description:
From the shores of Perth emerges a metalcore band with an established name for themselves in the scene, Make Them Suffer, with their fourth album from around the time the pandemic hit the world. Starting out as propellers of the niche leanings of symphonic deathcore and blackened death metal, they have since evolved into a more contemporary and progressive sounding style, which firmly locked itself in place with this particular release of theirs, How To Survive A Funeral. Seeing a modest amount of recognition in the national metal scene, this venture sets the sound of the band in stone and comes in swinging.
Extremity and symphonies meet into a swirling pool as the subgenre's signature elements of breakdowns and vocals alternating in cleanliness take centre stage in grabbing the attention of the listener. The melodic forces strike in specific tracks to their fullest power, ranging from being fully integrated at full capacity in songs like "Erase Me" to taking a back seat and setting the floor for harshness like in "Fake Your Own Death". This is outlined through the presence of the different vocalists at key points and their particular ways of delivering the emotion-filled lyrics that sets a striking contrast up and leads to the firm capture of one's immersion.
Make Them Suffer is a group that is far from hesitant to mix and match different angles of metal music to convey their aural art, and with the more consistent nature of the music present within How To Survive A Funeral, are now able to establish a distinguished identity for themselves and their works of passion alongside this experimentation. Though a certain spark seems to miss for me to truly appreciate the contents making up the album, it is difficult to deny the formidable quality that radiates from many of the tracks and the talents that went into their making, and so the end result is one I show high respect for. Imposing and strong in nature yet tactful in the way it showcases its multi-faceted build and balances between aggression and grace within modern metal music, this record is one to seek out for certain.
