And here comes the third! Will there be more to come? We shall find out.
New York boy turned rock star Danny Rocco, better known as Des Rocs, has had a particularly intriguing run as a musician wishing to channel in classic and faithful rock 'n' roll influences into the modern day artistic landscape. With zany yet electric rock tunes and highly impressing full-lengths decorating his discography up to this point, the stage is fully set for an album once more to be added to the collection. Enter the two-day old release To Hell and Back, a sum of 11 tracks that show the whole world of music and everyone tuned in once again what the natural showman's deal really entails.
Between striking riffs sounding through electric guitars and weighted percussions, melodical tunes with an edge, enhancements by mixing and a full-sounding composition gracing the ears, the entire ambience of the record seems essentially larger than life at every step. The main moving part truly stealing the show, however, is Des Rocs himself, not only through his incredibly strong singing voice powering through the already blaring instrumentation, but through his seemingly unwavering charisma and presence throughout, really letting the self-assured, cocky and yet multi-dimensional persona achieve vitality. Influences of blues, classic rock 'n' roll as well as more iconic acts in the world of glam rock and the like add a character to the tracks that makes them sound highly unique and reminiscent of music from artists / bands like The White Stripes, Queen, Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix, all in entirely different ways.
First diving into this record and having Rocco's absolute highlight works in mind, it is initially easy to dismiss the new output as lesser in quality due to some of the weaker tracks being scattered around the beginning and end of the experience. Once one gets into the proper substance of what the album has to offer - tracks such as "This Land", "The King" and "War" - that really channel in the best aspects of his music in abundance, eyes are fully opened to the musician's capabilities and artistic ceiling. It may take a while for these songs to reach their status as staples and highlights in Des Rocs' catalogue, it will be a day worth celebrating when they do. A spectacular album from a shining and blinding star in the scene.
